Thai dramas finally airing in Singapore!

19 Apr

Hey guys, hope everyone is doing well under the current Covid19 circumstances. I’ve been staying at home mostly since the start of the ‘circuit breaker’ in Singapore and have lots more free time during the weekends since no more meet ups outside! The drama front has been kinda meh for me, I ended up re-reading an old copy of ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ I found at home last weekend, and this week I’ve started on the Chinese web novel ‘Chenghua Fourteen Years’ (成化十四年). It’s a detective novel set in the Ming dynasty and while it’s technically a ‘BL (boys love)’ novel, the love line between the OTP is pretty subtle and focus is still on the cases and sleuthing skills of the main character. The current airing Cdrama ‘The Sleuth of Ming Dynasty’ is based on this novel (which was how I found out about it) but reviews of the drama thus far have criticized the scriptwriting so I’ll leave it for now unless the tide turns for it like how it went for ‘The Untamed’.

In other news, Thai dramas are finally on Singapore’s free to air TV channels! It’s been what, 10 years since I started watching lakorns but it’s remain a pretty niche drama choice in Singapore, I don’t even know anyone personally in real life that watches it! Please do leave a comment below if you are a fellow Singaporean who enjoys watching lakorns!

I saw an ad for ‘Buppae Saniwaat (Love Destiny)’ airing on Channel U, I think it’s the weekday 9pm slot? Hopefully this means more lakorns to come on prime time slots. Mediacorp (SG’s official broadcaster) has some tie up with another entertainment company and now has a few lakorns on their free streaming site. The choices don’t look super updated? But guess we gotta start somewhere.

Maybe it’s time to start poking around for new dramas to watch and get this blog active again! Please send your recommendations my way!

Anko Kon Ruk Strawberry teasers

5 Oct

I’d forgotten about Ken and Chompoo’s ‘Anko Kon Ruk Strawberry’ but oh my, the teasers have gotten me so psyched up for it! Chompoo is so freakin’ adorable!! Her character here reminds me of a louder and more mature Napdao with just as much, if not more sass and a bagful of tricks up her sleeves to get what she wants. Like in ‘Sood Sanaeha’ where the p’ek has a more plain/down-to-earth character to balance the theatrics of the n’ek, Ken’s character here also appears to be the mild, laid-back sort but I can always count on Ken to breathe life into whoever he’s playing. The first time I watched Chompoo was actually on ‘Weewa Wah Woon (Chaotic Wedding)’ where she paired up with Ken too but I dropped that within half hour and it turned me off Chompoo for a while until she won my heart in ‘Num Baan’. This time though I have high hopes for AKRS to make this pairing work and for me to finally finish watching a Ken lakorn where he’s not working with Ann!

Waddya know, ‘Anko Kon Ruk Strawberry’ will also be premiering on 9 Oct. October will be a crazy month for me on the work front but with 2 lakorns to entertain me on the side, it should make my weekends a lil’ brighter. 😉

Dramas lookout – Jun13

24 Jun

If you can’t already tell from my lack of drama updates, I have somehow managed to be not interested in any airing dramas and that’s saying a lot considering I have so many drama sources. But no worries, I should be able to get back into the swing of things soon with the following list of potential hits.

On Call 36 Hours II

2 Apr

All these recent talk of ‘On Call 36 Hours’ is making want to re-watch the show and it’s also getting me real excited for the sequel which is in the works. I’ve translated a recent interview of Kenneth Ma and Tavia Yeung where they talk about the sequel.

Sequel’s teaser from TVB’s sales presentation.

– On the sequel’s story

T: In this sequel, it’s impossible that we (Yat Kin Tau and Yu Zai) separate or have a 3rd party come between us. We got married and in the show we will have a kid but because my illness recurred, we had to abort the baby and this caused some problems between us. He doesn’t want the baby because it would endanger my health but I really want the baby because he is the only son in the family and I  wanted to give him a child so that’s the cause of conflicts. Family, career and his own personal career will also encounter problems because of me.

K: I will need this wife to support me and give me strength to get back on my feet.

T: He will have major problems with his career – his job, his confidence, family will all have problems. And in order to encourage him, I gave up my favourite cardiothoracic surgery and switched to the pathology department where I will work with Lawrence Ng.

Interviewer: And there may be some relationship complications?

T & K: Oh nononono, no 3rd party can get between us. ❤

K: An interesting thing about this script is, if you’ve watched ‘On Call 1’, you will know that she was the more pro-active one but in the sequel, when we are apart I will be the one taking the initiative to woo her back again. I find that interesting.

Both of them says that about 1/3 of the sequel has been filmed.

– Talking about each other

T: He’s a great guy, fantastic! He likes to stay at home. Not the kind who stays at home glued to the computer but to accompany his mom. He takes good care of his family is and very filial (Kenneth interjects to say ‘so are you’ and Tavia agrees. lol) His usual activies – though I don’t stay with him – he leaves work late and wakes up early. There’s lots of time but he doesn’t sleep, don’t know what he’s doing. Reading the newspaper at home, ask his friends out for soccer, go for tea with his mom, pick his mom up after she is done with mahjong. Haaa~ am I right? (K: Yes) I don’t stay with him but I know all his daily activities (K: Why do you know so much) I don’t know~

K: I know her very well too. Usually when she’s not filming, she also stays at home with her mom. (T: And what else?) oh yes, her dog.

They then talk about how they wish to take on happier or comedic roles in the future so they won’t have to keep crying or dying. Haaa.

What’s on my lakorn horizon

27 Feb

The lakorns I were excited for end of last year didn’t quite hold my attention as I had hoped: Qi Pao lost me around ep4,5 while I checked out of Khun Samee and Buang Barp after 1 ep. But I’m still holding out hope that the following new batches of lakorns will be good!

Pan Ruk Pan Rai
I don’t keep tabs on Ch5’s lakorns so I didn’t know about this one till Fia blogged about it. It’s pretty 90s kdrama makjang stuff with switched identities, amnesia, backstabbing, lies yada yada yada I can write the rest in my sleep but idk, I’m in the mood for it and am actually kinda excited for the explosion of dramatics that’s sure to come. Having Charebelle in the lead role also helped my interest ‘cos I have developed a liking for her since Dok Soke for no apparent reason. I don’t need deep, inspiring plot, just keep it not-stupid and not-draggy and I’ll be happy. Good news for those interested, PRPR is being subbed on Viki!

Paen Rai Pai Ruk
Similar sounding title as the first one but this one is a romcom that’s in the vein of Suay Rerd Cherd Sod judging from the teaser (read the synopsis here). Film and Matt are super adorable in the BTS clips I’ve seen so far and it’s whetting my apetite for this lakorn. I won’t have to wait too long though, just read on baidu that it’s premiering on 18/3.

Madam Dun
This one I’ll have to wait for since the cast have just gone for the fitting. The story is none like what I’ve seen from lakorns till now. Ploy plays Madam Dun, an entertainment guru who discovers Mario the country boy and brings him into the entertainment world (thanks to Fia for this info). A refreshing story with a refreshing cast, I can’t wait! AND P’PLOY I LOVE ALL YOUR LOOKS AT THE FITTING! *retreats from creepy fangirl mode*

ETA
I expected Ploy and Mario to have a p/nong relationship and for the drama to be focused on the Thai ent industry but according to Lyn’s blog Mario will play Ploy’s love interest in MD, so will it not be that different from the typical lakorns except with an older woman/younger man pairing? Hmm, we shall see.

Anyone has other upcoming lakorns to rec?

What’s on my lakorn horizon

31 Oct

Qi Pao is airing tomorrow! However much I make fun of Mart’s acting, I must admit to being partial to his dimpled charm which he should be putting to good use as the cold (read: expressionless) p’ek. No worries about Ann obviously and I like the murder/mystery/supernatural plot but I’m just an itty bitty concern about the execution since I belong to those who felt that Roy Mai wasted a potentially epic love storyline.

Some more news on Ann …. she is finally pairing up with Tik in Ya Leum Chan. With both their current standing in the industry, it’s like a ‘golden pairing’ of sorts but I’m not particularly excited for it. I want to like Tik but since being scarred by Kaew Teh Pee, I haven’t managed to enjoy anything of his and am I the only to find Ya Leum Chan’s story rather silly?

Chompoo is back with Rome for ‘Khun Samee Karmalor Tee Ruk’ which will be airing end Nov after Rang Ngao. I’m not sure of the story but from the BTS, I guess it’s the rom-com-y sort? At least I don’t think we’ll be getting another dumb as bricks p’ek like in Mia Taeng!

ETA

Seems like Ploy can’t get away from playing rai even if it’s the main role. I like her in nice roles like in ‘Phoo Yai Lee Gab Nang Ma’ and ‘Rak Mai Mee Wan Tai’ where I major fangirled over the OTP but Ploy does have a ‘fierce’ look that helps when she’s being nasty. Haa. I can’t quite figure out what’s going on from the teaser. Por’s a nasty p’ek, Ploy’s a two-face nasty nang’ek, Kan’s a nasty third wheel and Yard is … an innocent slave girl? Whut. Anyhow, I presume ‘Buang Barb’ will air within the year.

Rang Ngao ep 6

24 Jul

Thanks to encouragement from an Anon in my previous post, I picked up where I left off for ‘Rang Ngao’ and it turned out to be more interesting than I remembered! The first 5 episodes were centred on Tha, a sweet girl with an inferiority complex who got seduced into an extramarital affair by her boss. After suffering plenty of humiliation and bitch slapping from the boss’ wife, Tha returned to her home at the country side, broken and pregnant. She finally committed suicide when she felt that her pregnancy out of wedlock will bring shame to her parents. Now, Tha did suffer a lot at the hands of Nappa (the boss’ wife) but I found it hard to sympathize with her when she dug herself into this hole so after Tha died, I moved on to other dramas.

But now I think that RN’s ‘real’ start is at ep6 when Tha’s twin Nin returns and assumes Tha’s identity to avenge her death. Unlike Tha, Nin is a confident young lady who takes bs from no one and I was actually clapping at the screen throughout ep6 when Nin fights back. It was so funny to see the jaw-drop reaction of Tha’s colleagues when the usually mild and timid ‘Tha’ threw the insults right back anyone who dared to step on her. Revenge was sweet for Nin (dumping soda down Janepop’s pants was pure gold) and it was fun to watch for me but like what Veekit cautioned, Nin will inevitably get her own hands dirty if she continues with giving tit for tat. I doubt Nin will back off seeing how confident she is of her own abilities and as she gets to know more of what Tha suffered, anger will probably blind her to any mistakes she makes.

For those interested, Fia has done a recap of a Rak Kun Tao Fah special where the cast talk about the story and the characters they play. Gf/Wife vs Mom is a realistic problem that many face and it seems like Ploy/Cherry/Chompoo have interesting and distinct characters but I’m still not convince that the overall plot makes for good tv. You give me 3 fantastic lakorn worthy relationships and have them all ruined by the guy’s over possessive mom 3 times in a row? I think relationship wrecking is a job best left to psycho exes or deluded childhood friends. Then after all that pain, Marie gets the man. Sigh, Ken’s too fine for that! Marie looks like a kid beside Ken and it’s gonna take a lot to sell them as a couple to me.

I’ve always been neutral towards Chompoo and have not yet found of a lakorn of hers that attracts me enough to want to check it out but after seeing her in this special, I suddenly feel like giving Mia Teang a shot. Hmmm.

What’s next

15 Jul

I thought ‘The Magic Blade’ was gonna bring me back to drama-watching but alas, all the fun slash couldn’t make me care for Fu Hong Xue and I figured it was time to abandon ship when I started laughing at the hero’s angsty times. It did pique my interest in the wuxia genre again and I ended up obsessing over the ‘Listening to Snow Pavilion (听雪楼)’ novel series that I randomly picked up. So, still no dramas for me. (Well, technically I’m following Burn Notice and White Collar but they feel more like old friends that I meet up with for some chillax time every week unlike Asian dramas which can get me invested mind, body and soul!)

But, a couple of upcoming lakorns may just do the trick.

Ann is back with ‘Qi Pao’! I kept my expectations low for this because a) I didn’t fancy the story of ‘Roy Mai’ which belonged to the same fabric series b) the p’ek Smart is not exactly known for his acting skills. The teaser has managed to lift my anticipation for it though and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that the actual lakorn will be as suspenseful as the teaser promised.

Rak Khun Tao Fa update

17 May

I’m back from my hols with more RKTF updates! Haa, I don’t particularly care for this lakorn after reading the detailed storyline but why oh why does it have such a powerful cast that I can’t help but keep track of its progress? The identity of the fourth n’ek has finally been revealed after much suspense to be Marie Boenner. Marie who you ask? Eh, I have no idea either. She’s a newbie with only 2 lakorns on her resume – neither of which I’ve seen so I can’t judge her acting – still, I’m really surprise Noi picked her considering the status/star power/talent of the rest of the cast. I presume the 4th n’ek will be getting the man so Marie better step it up or she’ll be picked apart by the fans of the others.

When news of this lakorn first broke, I secretly hoped for Ann to be the 4th n’ek but now that I know the story is meh, I think Ann is better off keeping her schedule free for another lakorn with Ken where she’s the only lady for him. Heeh.

I do love Cherry and don’t even mind Chompoo but my bias is still Ploy so have photo of Ken and Ploy’s wedding! Though it was eventually foiled by Ken’s mom I think …

— —
RKTF is pretty much off my anticipated lakorn list but a couple others still remain.
Rang Ngao: Is it a tradition to remake popular lakorns every 10 year cycle? Cos Ken T and Ann’s first collaboration 10 years ago is getting an update with Janie and newbie actor Ken Phupoom. Which reminds me I need to go catch up on the original which I dropped halfway.

– Qi Pao: Based off a novel from the same series as Roy Mai, Ann reunites with Mart for a love story also involving textiles and ghost(s). I didn’t enjoy Roy Mai’s story much and I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this will be good ‘cos it’s Ann!

PS. Is anyone watching Dok Soke (Pong/Charebella)? Is it any good? Long suffering n’ek, hot (much) older p’ek, catty secondary females, oh the cliches but it’s my kinda thing!

Pang Sanaeha first impressions

5 Apr

psh11

Wow, didn’t realise I haven’t watched a lakorn for almost half a year. Well, I’m finally back with Pang Sanaeha. I don’t know much about the story but the feedback online seems positive and it also stars Gun Kantathaworn, my evil-and-hot vampire from Rak Mai Mee Wan Tai so I decided to give it a shot. The first half of the first episode was a bit blah for me but after Tae (Tle) finally accepts that the pretty ghost following him isn’t going anywhere and decides to help her, the plot starts moving forward. I’m two episodes in and so far it’s been a good mix of humour, mystery and horror (ghost count: 3).

I believe the green-face ghost is Ketsarina and signs point to her having been murdered by Sak and Oi but I’m still trying to figure everything else out. Siangwann’s real identity is the obvious mystery but I’m more intrigued by Paul/Petch’s side of the story. Why the name change? Why is he working for a drug lord (though I must say the black suits required of a drug lord’s henchman makes Gun look oh so delicious)? What is his relationship with Deun? Initially I thought they were siblings and he was working for Dennis for his sister’s sake but from the way they addressed each other, it doesn’t look like the case. They don’t act like lovers either so what’s their deal? Something happened to both of them in Pak Chong and how does that something tie in to everything else? Ah, so many questions and I’m looking forward to unveiling them one by one. Just hope the answer will be a satisfactory one!

Despite the number of ghosts running around, the horror quotient isn’t high but I have a very low tolerance of such stuff so it’s been enough to creep me out. I watched ep2 at night when I was home alone and the scene where Sak struggled with his bicycle in the rain only to realise Ketsarina was sitting behind really made my skin crawl. Fortunately, there aren’t many such genuinely scary (to me) moments and the ghost scenes are usually more funny than scary like when Ketsarina came asking for Tae’s help and he muttered that he wasn’t the ghost whisperer. OTP wise, there hasn’t been much development so far so not feeling much for either pair and I’m actually enjoying the interaction between Tae and Sri more. This show is off to a good start and hopefully this will be the first Ch7 lakorn that I enjoy!

For readers of this blog who know Thai, I gather from the subs that Siangwaan uses ‘sab’ in place of ‘roo’ (to know) and if I didn’t misunderstand, is ‘sab’ a dialect or a less commonly used word? This is the first time I’ve come across it.

Lakorn news: Kudalakorn has translated a detailed synopsis of Ruk Khun Tao Fah and my anticipation of this lakorn has just dropped by 100 points. It’s just … not my kinda thing. Even with the power cast, I doubt I’ll be sitting through this one.
