(another!) Sawan Biang re-watch

12 Feb

So, instead of watching the dramas I promised myself I would (Thai Full House, Rahut Rissaya, I Need Romance 3), I ended up re-watching Sawan Biang for the nth time over the past couple of days from ep9 onwards. And guess what, I’m still not tired of it. Some random thoughts …

sawanbiang9
(Ep9) You’re not feeling well? What’s wrong?

I’ve not watched all of Ken’s lakorns obviously but I dare say Kawee is his performance EVER (if you think other, please let me know which lakorn! I’d love to check it out). Narin is the one deserving all the sympathies here and considering what Kawee did to her, it’s a wonder she’s not beating him over the head with a big stick already. But when Kawee sweeps in, trying to express his concern in his clumsy, brute fashion, I really can’t hate him.

(Ep10)
Narin: I wonder who you (the baby) will look like. Will you look like mom?
Kawee: Maybe the baby will look like dad.

Every time I watch SB I can’t help going zomg Ken why you so amazing?? Now, I’m not saying what Kawee did to Narin is excusable just cos he’s a woobie now, but I feel for him and I can’t hate him like I do with other nasty p’eks and I think the credit in a large part goes to Ken’s portrayal. He makes you feel every bit of Kawee’s anger, hurt, rage, sadness, regret.

(ep11) Narin: Let me ask you, if I weren’t pregnant, would you still care for me? If I didn’t have the baby, would you have done all this for me? Cook, pick flowers, give up everything to live here, would you have done it for me? I was only Narin, and not bearing the heir to the Worawath family, would you still care for me?

A valid question. Do you think Kawee would have done all this for not-pregnant Narin? I believe he would – eventually – but the baby was the catalyst that threw him into action. Kawee had been refusing to acknowledge his growing feelings for Narin because that would mean he ‘lost’ to Leela and it probably would’ve taken a long absence from Narin to force him to face his feelings, put down his pride and go beg for her forgiveness . What do you think?

I also appreciated that even when Kawee realises his mistakes and tries to redeem himself, the old proud Kawee doesn’t suddenly disappear overnight. Every time Narin rejects him and his efforts to please her, his temper would surface. To Kawee, he is making his greatest effort and putting his entire heart into doing things for Narin but she rebuffs him time after time and so that fiery, impatient Kawee would jump out. But Narin would point out – very rightly – that these are all nothing compared to what he put her through, and he should just get lost because she will never forgive him. The old Kawee would then slink away and the new Kawee ever more determined to do his best for Narin. I love this process of Kawee learning. Learning that as much as he hurts, others hurt too. Learning to say sorry, to give, to sacrifice, to be responsible. Learning what it means to love a person.

Perhaps this is what makes Sawan Biang such an enduring lakorn for me.

just great! now i must do scene selection watching again for sb. well, i think i do that once every year for sb… yes it is that good.

it is very difficult for me to express my love for sb due to moral beliefs. i am a victim of stockholm syndrome when it comes to kawee.

When it comes to SB2008, I talk in circle. Let’s just say I have a love-hate relationship.

i have to accept that his chemistry or acting is PAR EXCELLENCE when he is with ann.. you can call me delusional KA fan but thats what i felt watching ken with other actress…

btw i feel like the kawee character is just meant to ken and wiseversa….. he is just too awesome in that i can feel his every emotions..but my Q is why is not like that when he does it with other actress?

Same here, I’ve yet to complete a drama of Ken’s where he isn’t paired with Ann yet I don’t seem to have this problem with other Ann dramas??

i’m so glad i stumbled on your blog…i watched sb in 2012 and one of those non thai viewers that just had to watch the rest of the episodes that wasn’t eng subbed raw and kinda guessed with their actions and pictures what’s going on. ….i was very devastated that there was not one single website where i could watch the rest of that lakorn english subbed. up until now 2014, i still google and search if there’s any kind soul who would do a recap or post an eng subbed version of the reconciliation…this is how much i love sb even though I don’t agree with the morals and ethics portrayed in it, i think ken and anne are the reasons why i loved it with their stellar performance in it. I am still craving to see them pair up in another lakorn that is equally fantastic or perhaps exceed sawan biang and Sood saneha with storyline, acting, directing etc could you possibly do a eng recap of the final episode, i just would love to understand their conversations word for word. 🙂 there seems to be a current drought for outstanding lakorns….i’m watching yah leum chan for the love of Anne but really not feeling the storyline and it’s kinda draggy too. nonetheless, Anne is still an amazing actress in this one, even though I don’t favor her character as of yet. 🙂

SB was my first lakorn , watched it half with eng sub/ half with spanish sub 6/7 months ago and even so, the experience was so powerful that after that it made 90% of the other lakorns absolutely unwatchable (especially the ones with R scenes & Mart Kissadra).
I have come across very few other thai dramas with that kind of powerful acting. Some scenes are just beautifully written, (between Ken & the father, when the mother discovers her daughter is pregnant, and the exchanges between Ann & Ken in ep.10 as you pointed out).
I must have watched it 4 times in the course of the year (skipping the R scenes the last 3 times) and found it more riveting every time, with my moral compass in panic mode.

Speaking of riveting I have to thank you for your review of Sai Roong. Ann owns every single scenes and her journey really worth following.
I really have to thank all the bloggers & subbers out there who makes it possible to discover those asian dramas.

hello, I’m more than half a year late in replying but I’m glad you enjoyed Sai Roong! Ann really brought life to her character and whatever flaws the lakorn may otherwise have, watching Ann alone was worth the time. I hope more fans of Ann (or any lakorn fan) will give it a shot!

I couldn’t agree more. The first time I watched this amazing drama, I felt guilty for not hating Kawee. After watching many times, I feel like everyone was responsible for the colossal train wreck that happened, including Rin herself. Please don’t misunderstand, I am not blaming Rin for being raped. Rin is responsible for encouraging Leela to marry Ken, knowing it was to win against Kawee. Lee is responsible for marrying a man she didn’t love, to be close to his son. Ken was responsible for marrying a woman the same age as his son, knowing she obsessed over his son. Their mother is responsible for not protecting her daughter. She continually pushed Kawee on Rin. Making her accept his gift, forcing her to eat with him, etc.
Kawee is responsible for his own behavior, but he is also a product of his selfish father.
I believe that Kawee loved Rin before he knew she was pregnant. He couldn’t stay away from her and continued to seek her out. I think it was necessary and just for Rin not to forgive him easily. I think Kawee having to work for forgiveness and the chance to be with son, changed Kawee for good.
